Sculptures - The Singer

The Singer

The Singer

The idea of a trophy for the Schubert Society of Britain, started a long time ago possibly in the 60's when Alan Tabelin the then secretary of the Schubert Society of Britain asked me to sculpt something that could be presented to an artist every year. But I was too busy at the time.

The opportunity came when my stepson, David Evans‑Tipping, wanted to give me a generous birthday present & I said I would rather spend the cash towards a sculpture. Fortunately I had just been in touch with Schubert Society of Britain, and they were delighted to fulfil Alan's wish posthumously.

I had in mind a sculpture of Jennifer Vyvyan but this changed on hearing Jamie Barton singing in the first round of the Cardiff Singer of the Year 2013. Her voice set my heart on fire & I just had to sculpt 'The Singer'. I also wanted to depict the energy that was pouring from her when she sang hence the base with the songbird.

The sculpture is in memory of my husband Francis Loring & Alan Tabelin.
